Subject: Art Calendar: The Business Magazine for Visual Artists Date: Thu, 8 Mar 2001 00:03:20 -0600 From: Matt Maldre <matt@spudart.org> While at a Borders in Evanston, I ran across a magazine called "Art Calendar: The Business Magazine for Visual Artists". It has a bunch of interesting articles on being an artist. Such as: * The Power of Two (a story of how two artists market their work together) * I the Jury, I the Judged (a story from an artist of what it's like to be a juror) * Artists Need Midwives (Midwives is used as a metaphor for how artists could use a helper) * Soul Food: Finding Courage to Go for Your Dreams (Despite the cheesy look of this article, it was actually helpful) * Small Town, Big on Art: Paducah's Artist Relocation Program (uh, i didn't read this article) * Federal Updates (possible tax breaks for artists, freelancers case in court) * The Making of an Art Market: Australia Dreaming (a look at Australia's art market today) * Why Art is Essential in Our Public Schools (self-explanatory title here) * Sleep Creating (how to increase the potential of getting ideas in your sleep) The magazine has a homey feel to it. This issue is in just black and white, so the five bucks may seem a bit much. But the articles are entertaining and helpful for the starting artist and for the seasoned professional. In fact, in the next digest, I'll mention their "Federal Updates" article as part of a little report on what's happening with the government and the arts. So if you're in Borders sometime, check and see it they recieve Art Calendar. I'll be curious to hear which Borders carries it. >>click here to respond to this post<< ________________________________________________ 3. Subject: fun stuff...art squatters 3rd biggest attraction in Paris From: "Maldre, Matthew" <MMaldre@Tribune.com> Date: Wed, 7 Mar 2001 17:10:43 -0600 One of Paris's hottest art destinations is, quite literally, illegal. "Squat du 59, rue de Rivoli" is a commune of artists squatting in a downtown building, and producing volumes of experimental art that have caught the Parisian public's attention. But come spring, when city authorities begin evicting squatters, the commune faces extinction, unless a donor can be found to buy their building.
