Subj: Public Art CD-ROM and Job Available: Art-in-Architecture Assistant

Hi Yeah the CDROM of Public Art in the City is available at the Cultural Center's bookshop located in the building. Or you can call the Public Art Office and ask them how to order it. The # is 312 742 1161.

JEff was the famed photographer and I did the boring stuff, but it was good to see the hard work finally materialize in a real CDROM.

If anyone's in Chicago and would like to see what I do here with the Fine ARts and Art-in-Architecture Programs, give me a ring at 312 353 0744. I have a lot of cool projects taking place. One of the 7 A-i-A projects is a $ 640,000 commission, we chose Judith Shea.

I need help as I already have a part-time assistant and it's not enough. If anyone's interested in even summer work I may have opportunities.

Subj: Call for Artists: Around the Coyote

Call for ARTISTS:
Dates of the 10th Annual AROUND THE COYOTE ARTS FESTIVAL are set for September 9-12, 1999 in the Bucktown/Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village neighborhoods of Chicago. With over 60 sites and more than 500 artists participating in all spectrums of the arts, the Around the Coyote Arts Festival has become one of the largest studio tours and art gatherings in the country.

The Around the Coyote is a non-profit organization committed to highlighting the talent of the artists living in the Bucktown/Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village neighborhoods, as well as exposing the work of emerging artists in Chicago and the country. Through a juried process, the 1999 Around the Coyote Arts Festival will select 50-75 non-local visual artists to showcase their artwork in the neighborhoods of Bucktown/Wicker Park/Ukrainian Village during the three-day event.

They are currently accepting applications for artists interested in participating or performing in this year's festival. To receive an application, an artist may send a SASE to: Around the Coyote Arts Festival, PO Box 477750, Chicago, IL 60647 or email your name, address, and phone number to aroundthecoyote@hotmail.com

Artists' applications will be sent out beginning April 10, 1999 DEADLINE: June 14, 1999

Subj: Matt's Top Ten Illinois Art Fairs

The brochure packed with over 150 Art Fairs in Illinois is out now. Call 'em up and get a free one sent to you! 1-800-237-6994
I went through it and picked out my TOP TEN art fairs. I considered the number of exhibitors, the attendance and the quality of work being shown. In some cases I have gone to some shows, in some cases I just guessed by the numbers I had available. I tried to pick a variety of shows. Some in Chicago, some in the burbs. Some large, some small. I tend to favor ones that show only fine art (no crafts) and ones that really HUGE.

Here they are in order of dates.

Subj: Tough guys make pretty things

SHEBOYGAN, Wis.--Parks Superintendent Paul Meyer admists his surprise when he checked on a site where a work crew had cleaned up tree damage from a severe wind storm last November. Stumps from downed trees had been transformed into chain-saw carvings, in the form of windmills and huge mushrooms.

Meyer wasn't happy about the work crew's artistic touch--espicially considering it was done while on duty. "They're cute and everything, but that says these guys have too much time on their hands," he said. The carvings improved the aesthetics of Evergreen Park, said Scott Cupp, lead man for the crew. "Instead of leaving Mother Nature looking scarred," Cupp said, "we thought we'd improved her a bit." (AP)
